Say hello to our new Thai Crispy Noodle Bowl. We explore where this bowl came from, how to make it, and why you should try it!
For our bowl, we drew inspiration from traditional Thai food cuisine—the likes of Phat kaphrao , Mee Krob, and Massaman Curry.
The Origins
In the name of authenticity, we made our Thai Crispy Noodle Bowl based on traditional dishes popular with the Thai locals.
Phat kaphrao, a favorite among the locals in Thailand. It comes with minced pork, seasoned fish sauce, chopped chili bamboo shoots, and topped with a fried egg and basil. The word Kaphrao literally means “Holy Basil” and it is a center piece of this dish. This dish also is commonly served with chicken, beef or seafood. Although it is now a local favourite, and common street food dish, it is a relatively new dish to the Thai culture.
Massaman Curry is a rich and heavy flavored curry made with local spices and dried chili peppers with over a dozen ingredients. Some of the ingredients include cinnamon, cloves, cumin, bay leaves, nutmeg, and cardamom. Massaman curry gets its creaminess from coconut milk. It is not suprising then that it has a high amount of calories. It is not a spicy dish though. Often rated as mildly spicy, though Westerners might disagreee.
Traditionally this dish was introduced by the Persian merchants and is made most commonly with chicken. As such it can be seen as a fusion with both Thai and Indian influences.
Mee Krob (thai crispy fried noodles) is a famous Thai recipe that comes with crispy rice noodles topped with sweet and sour sauce. Often it comes topped with onions and peppers and finished off with a slice of lime on top. It is a relatively easy to make but super tasty Thai dish. Add pork, chicken, shrimp, tofu or all the above to create a full flavoured and wholesome meal. In summary, Mee Krob is predominately sweet but balanced with a nice acidic touch. It makes for a lighter meal unlike the heavier Massaman curry.
